The United Independent Broadcasters

Judson's vision led to the creation of the United Independent Broadcasters (UIB) network in Chicago. This small radio network, composed of a loose affiliation of independent stations, marked the genesis of CBS. As the network grew, it attracted the attention of William S. Paley, a young and ambitious businessman.

The Columbia Broadcasting System

In September 1928, Paley became the president of UIB and renamed the network the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). With his astute business acumen and a flair for showmanship, Paley expanded CBS into a national powerhouse. He introduced innovative programming and lured top talent to the network, quickly establishing CBS as a formidable force in the broadcasting industry.
